E-Voting, Secure or Not?

E-Voting, Secure or Not? More and more organizers and voters are recognizing the advantages of e-voting, but the most frequently mentioned concern is security. Most of them do not understand how the application works and how they can be sure that the elections will be confidential, secure, and transparent. Security of internet systems is a daily concern. Digitalization is all around us. Although people find it hard to part with standardized methods, education and familiarity with the application are necessary for them to understand that these methods are much safer than traditional voting, as they prevent tampering at all levels.

What Does E-Voting Encompass? It is a voting system conducted through smart devices. Many countries already use such an option, and there are growing discussions about it in Croatian media. Although this year's parliamentary elections will be conducted in the regular way by physically going to polling stations, no one knows what such voting will look like in a few years.

More and more organizers and voters are recognizing the advantages of e-voting, but the most frequently mentioned concern is security. Most of them do not understand how the application works and how they can be sure that the elections will be confidential, secure, and transparent. The FairVotes e-voting system is a platform that allows you to create and conduct elections in just a few clicks, and all you need for it is an internet connection and a smart device (phone, computer, tablet).

The FairVotes e-voting system offers two authentication options, depending on the desired level of security. It allows the organizer to choose the method of voter authentication by email or double authentication: by email and SMS. Email authentication involves sending an email to voters containing a direct link to e-voting. Once the voter accesses e-voting, their vote is automatically recorded, and the link becomes inactive (it cannot be used again). Email and SMS authentication provide a double level of security. In addition to the previously described email, the voter also verifies their identity with an SMS. In the case of choosing this option, the system sends an SMS message to each voter via the selected contact database, containing an access code for e-voting.

The FairVotes e-voting system also uses a unique key to ensure that each voter submits their vote only once. One person equals one vote.

Once the vote is recorded or the link is opened once, it becomes inactive. Furthermore, the link is intended for a specific address, and attempting to forward it will result in an inactive link. Voting results are displayed to the organizer in such a way that they can only see statistics on who received the email, who opened the same email, who received the message, to whom the message was not delivered, and who voted.

At no point does the organizer see for whom a specific voter cast their vote. Only at the end of the elections does the organizer receive e-voting statistics. Such an e-voting system allows for maximum security, and the application itself is updated daily. During the election period, it is always possible to opt for additional expert supervision to ensure that everything goes smoothly.
